Beginners Golf

August 17th, 2010

The phrase beginners golf instruction gives off the distinct image of a young child trying to learn Beethoven’s 5th in his or her first piano lesson. Having said that, it’s really not that difficult if you keep in mind that learning golf, like learning piano is all about precision and patience. Golf for beginners is about tempering expectations and developing your golf swing in such a way that will allow you to grow and improve as you learn the game. The last thing you want is to start down a bad path, develop bad habits and wind up frustrated with yourself.

There are as many golf tips out there for beginners and experienced players alike as there are fish in the ocean and most of them are not all that helpful so be careful who you listen to as you learn the game. Many instructors will describe to you various mechanical processes that you should subscribe to as you try to learn. Some of these include: “keep your left arm straight, widen your swing at the top, turn your hips first, don’t sway, hit into a firm left side, head down, stay behind the ball”.. and there are others too numerous to mention. While all these mechanical thoughts are well meaning and they do work within certain frameworks and swings, thoughts of this nature can destroy the natural motion that you should be developing. These types of thoughts serve to shift your focus away from your target where it should be and onto a single portion of your golf swing… so be very careful.

Like learning any sport, golf for beginners requires some practice and you should be prepared to spend at minimum, a couple of hours weekly as you start learning the game. As you become more proficient, you’ll find that you don’t need to practice nearly as much to maintain an average level of play.

Beginners golf programs should include very clear, step by step information on how to develop your grip, your posture and your alignment. These 3 fundamentals are absolutely essential and should have your focus very early in the process. I recommend that you use a neutral grip, square alignment and athletic posture. Any golf instruction program you use should have each of these clearly defined and explained so that you start on a solid foundation and don’t develop habits that will hold back your progress.

You can click the link below to download a very good free lesson covering how to develop the proper grip. There is nothing to buy and you don’t have to give up your email or anything so no need to worry. It’s simply a very good free lesson on grip that I feel all beginners should view.

When choosing a program from which to learn the game, bear in mind that golf can be a very confusing game so you want to choose an instruction program that is simple to understand and easy to apply. You want an instructor who writes and talks in simple, easy to understand phrases. Some instructors today, talk at such a technical level you’d think they were addressing Tiger Woods or Phil Mickelson.

Keep in mind, at this stage of your game, you want to develop your swing... a swing that you can repeat within your personal framework of physical limitations and assets. Just because Tiger’s swing works extremely well for him doesn’t mean it will work for you so use a program that teaches you to develop a solid base and then focuses on you and your swing.

Another sign of a really good program is that all really good programs will include methods of monitoring yourself as you practice so you know you’re making progress. Criteria will be outlined that you should look for and maintain as you practice.

Last but not least, a really good program will grow with you... giving you ways to challenge yourself and continue improving as you get more and more proficient.

Getting good at golf may sound hard in the beginning but really it’s not that hard to develop a game you can be proud of if you start with a solid foundation and avoid the trap of fiddling and muddling with mechanics and choose an instruction program that teaches you to focus on the result... the target.

Nothing else really matters except your own passion and love for the game.
